Obesity is a huge problem in the United States. Nearly 40 percent of Americans are obese, and even more are overweight. Unfortunately, this problem is far more than just a cosmetic one. Obesity comes with a very long list of health problems and threats, including increased risk of disease and death.
Obesity and health risks
We gain weight when we consume more energy than we can use, but that’s not the whole story. The diets that lead to obesity are often also deficient in nutrients, which can wreak havoc on the health of obese individuals. Diets high in fat and cholesterol — which are exactly those same diets which will most likely lead to obesity — can clog up our arteries and put us at risk of heart problems. Facts about colon cancer show that poor diet and obesity can increase your chance of coming down with this terrible disease. Other cancers can also be caused by obesity, and so can diabetes, heart disease, and a whole lot more.
Why are we obese?
It’s pretty clear that obesity is a bad thing, yet a huge number of Americans continue to walk around with a spare tire (or two). So what’s going on?
It’s nothing too mysterious, unfortunately. Experts say that Americans eat over-large portions of food, eat the wrong foods, and don’t exercise enough. There’s no magic bullet to cure obesity in America (or in yourself). The simple fact of that matter is that we each need to do better when it comes to choosing our foods, controlling our portions, and getting the exercise that we need to stay thin and healthy.
Tackling your obesity problem
If you’re one of the many, many Americans who struggles with his or her weight, don’t worry: there is hope. In fact, the prescription for ending your obesity problem is pretty simple and straightforward.
To lose weight, we need to eat healthy foods. That means unprocessed “whole foods,” especially vegetables, which are rich in nutrients and light on calories. We can eat reasonable portions of foods with low “calorie density,” so dieting doesn’t have to be about self-deprivation. We should also exercise, of course: experts recommend at least a half-hour of exercise a day, which will be a lot easier if you develop a habit (exercise at the same time every day, and consider trying to turn your exercise plan into a new hobby, like running or hiking). Whatever helps you stick to your diet and accelerate your progress is good, but remember the basics of nutrition and exercise — and remember, too, that fighting obesity is a vital thing to do for the sake of your own health.
